Lasers for Hair Removal and Skin Treatment

By Morgana Reichel

There are two main uses for lasers in cosmetic procedures: skin treatment and hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal

Having hair in unwanted places is not only a hassle, but it can make you self-conscious about the way you look. Laser hair removal offers an easy, long-lasting, and virtually painless way to remove unwanted hair, and keep it off.

The process is fairly simple. A high energy beam of light emitted by a laser is absorbed by the hair follicle. The hair follicle is treated just long enough, so as to not damage the surrounding skin, with laser pulses that last only a fraction of a second. Once absorbed, the laser light energy is transformed into heat, destroying the hair bulb at the base of the hair follicle.

A pigment called melanin, which is produced by melanocytes, is found in the hair bulb and determines the colour of your hair. In laser hair removal, the target for the laser energy is this melanin pigment. A laser's energy will be absorbed into the follicle more effectively, producing better results, if an individual has more melanin in his/her hair.

It doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal, but the treatment effectively slows hair growth. It typically takes several treatments to provide relief from unwanted hair. Also, maintenance treatments might be needed periodically.

Hair removal treatments safely remove body hair without damaging the surrounding lighter skin with the laser.

The procedure is generally painless. Possible symptoms, which are minor and curable, include: slight discomfort that feels like a rubber band against the skin may occur, and soreness or tenderness may accompany the healing process.

Laser hair removal is great because it offers long-term results. To completely rid yourself of unwanted hair, it may take several treatment sessions, but once it is gone, in most cases, the effect will last. And any new hair growth is easily treatable.

Laser Skin Treatments

Skin treatments involving lasers differ from hair removal, because they go beyond the upper layer of skin (epidermis) and target below the second layer (dermis). Of the many types of laser skin treatments, a popular one is laser skin resurfacing. It involves a laser that gently removes layers of damaged skin so that healthy skin can form in its place.

Even out skin tone, and reduce signs of aging, such as highly-visible veins, wrinkles, and blotchiness via laser skin treatments.

Another type of laser skin treatment works by penetrating the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin to build healthy new tissue underneath. In no time at all, the healthy tissue will reduce sagging skin and wrinkles by repairing the tightness and elasticity that your skin once had.

The actual laser skin treatment usually painless. And, the pain during healing is minimal in the majority of cases. Your face will likely be red and a little swollen following the resurfacing session. This should subside in just a few days; You can go back to your regular life right after you leave the clinic. It may take several procedures to achieve the desired results with laser skin treatment; the results can often be subtle, yet by the end of your sessions, you should see noticeable changes in your skin.
